Ideas for Recruiting Walkers

September 18th, 2006 Posted in Announcements/News

The team leaders brainstormed ideas for how to recruit walkers and here are 25 ideas what we came up with: [Add your ideas in the comments too :)]

1. Offer an incentive. Pick a certain number of registered walkers you wish to attain–and offer an incentive. Ex. The 10th person to register wins a $5 Starbucks giftcard!

2. Post FOA flyers/collage at libraries, supermarkets or hospitals.

3. Talk with your pediatricians office about FOA, invite doctors and staff to participate!

4. Walk around your neighborhood with FOA info and registration forms. [Many chapters offer a registration form that is a word document.]

5. Wear FOA gear!

6. Advertise for free on Craigslist.org (under volunteers and events).

7. Recruit other groups or associations (teacher’s association, junior women’s league, firefighter’s or nurses association, etc.) to walk as an affiliate or individuals.

8. Send recruiting letter or email through local LLS (in their newsletter) sharing the affiliate team program and GNO. Or, obtain permission to send it directly.

9. Host a wrap around or kickoff bbq/potluck. Offer goodies or prizes if people bring a friend or if they register or donate.

10. Get listed on a campus’ volunteer list so students can get community service hours.

11. Contact your local boy scouts or girl scouts. They can earn community service badges from this.

12. Post a web ad on your blog or website. Get them here http://www.friendsofallie.org/html/foa_ads.htm

Or, save one of these to your hard drive and add to your website:

13. In your letter asking for donations to friends and family, ask them to walk too.

14. Contact local businesses to see if they’d be interested in starting an affilate team.

15. Have an awareness event!

16. If you attend a church, ask if they could put something in the newsletter

17. Stand outside a large concert, fair/festival or sporting event and hand out flyers.

18. Hold a fundraiser! For example a scrap-booking crop, bowling or other fundraiser and advertise for that. Give a quick speech about LTN/FOA and what their donation is going for and pass out FOA fact sheets or LTN sign up sheets

19. Check out local mom’s groups. Check www.meetup.com for info on local groups.

20. Take advantage of the recycling program! Pass out inkjet bags to anyone you know that has a printer, and when you pass out the bags you can also give them a FOA fact sheet with it. Go to office depot (or office supply store) and put some inket recycling bags and a FOA fact sheet on the car windshields (under the wiper to hold them down)

21. Hold a neighborhood block party to get to know your neighbors and recruit walkers from there.

22. Place an ad on a local Freecycle website.

23. Hand out fliers at the youth department in your local library.

24. Spend an afternoon at a busy/large community park and hand out fliers.

25. Place an ad in your local newspaper.
