Every Dollar Counts Toward a Cure!
Thank you for stopping by! It’s Day 3 of the Blogging for Blood Cancer event! Today’s prizes include a Beautiful Handmade Soap set from 5-year-old Tasha and 5 pairs of assorted sterling silver earrings (valued at $25) from Designing-Diva. Yesterday’s winner was Commenter #2 – Carrie from PA. Click here to see what walk is closest to you and how you can join the Light The Night Friends of Heroes team.
To qualify to win, leave a comment with an answer to the question after reading the post.
So far we’ve blogged about the importance of blood cancer research and the Light The Night Walk. The one important component that ties these together is money.
Not only is the Light The Night walk an evening to honor blood cancer patients in the biggest battle of their lives, it is also to celebrate the teams of volunteers who fundraise to support blood cancer research and patient service. Funding is absolutely necessary for research to continue and this research will SAVE LIVES.
HOW YOUR DOLLARS ARE USED:
75 cents of every dollar spent goes directly towards supporting The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s mission of a cure. Society-funded research has led to key advances in understanding blood cancer and the life-saving drugs to fight them.
- $500 provides a patient with leukemia, lymphoma or myeloma with Patient Financial Aid to support medical treatment, medications and travel to medical appointments for one year.
- $500 allows 10 patients to login to a Webcast and receive the latest medical breakthroughs.
- $400 funds a Family Support Group program for one year.
- $100 provides three patients with access to an information teleconference.
- $100 allows four patients to make a first connection with a trained peer counselor.
THE TRIUMPHS:
- A newly FDA approved drug, Gleevac, has been shown to normalize blood counts in nearly all patients with chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML). Dr. Brian Druker, a Society-funded researcher, is responsible for this remarkable innovation in cancer research.
- In 1974 the 5 year survival rate for children with the most common form of leukemia was just 53%. Today, 86% of children diagnosed will survive.
- The five year survival rate for Hodgkin’s Lymphoma has nearly doubled from 40% in 1960 to 83% today.
PUTTING THE FUN IN FUNDRAISING:
Fundraising does not have to be a chore! The local Light The Night Staff is trained to help teams raise money and has easy and free tools available. To get new walkers started, some fundraising ideas include:
- Partnering with a business to sell Light The Night Paper Balloons can help contact donors that you wouldn’t normally reach. (Check our Walker Resources or this post for details.) Sometimes companies also have a matching gifts program to boost fundraising dollars.
- If you register for Light The Night and provide an email address, you’ll automatically have a secure online fundraising page created. You can personalize the page like this one or this one and send the URL to family and friends. Participants using the onine fundraising tend to raise about 200% more than those that don’t!
- What do you enjoy? Bowling, scrapbooking, barbeques, golf… turn it into a fundraiser! Visit our Fundraising Idea Sheet or the FOH Newsletters for more ideas.
- Anyone can fundraise! All it takes is a little creativity and passion. One of today’s sponsors is 5-year-old Tasha who sells her handmade soaps to help raise money for her two young friends with leukemia. If she can do it, so can you!
For even more ideas, see all posts under the Fundraising category.

My daughter who is in junior high and I were talking about this. She likes the walkathon idea as she has done it for March of Dimes. But she also likes the idea of getting her school involved in a year long plan with car washes, donation jars, and a community yard sale. I agree. The more you can do the better. And how cool is Tasha? Amazing.

My plan this year is to get some local companies to help me sell paper balloons.

Walkathons have undoubtedly raised tremendous amount of money throughout the years for various causes and a lot of people participate in them; but how about taking it a little further and having a dance marathon?! I’ve been thinking about that one for a while and it would be interesting to see the outcome. Maybe a 24 hour dance marathon or until there’s one person or couple left and there could definitely be a trophy given to the last person or couple standing or some other big prize and then give other, smaller prizes out throughout the day and night. It would definitely be interesting to see!

I used to live in a small town and we had many benefits over the years. One particular type was a carnival with a cake walk, fishing booth, country store, ring toss, etc. They sold plates of BBQ (usually chicken or beef) with the trimmings, and had a raffle for items donated by local merchants. They were usually extremely successful.

[...] I’m guessing this whole contest is to really get people involved, and increase donations and participation in this community. At Friends of Heroes, every 75 cents of a dollar is spent towards supporting The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s mission of a cure. You can find out what your donations do. [...]

what events could you do..could any of us do?
single or community garage sales–hey you were not using the junk anyway- right
same with a huge book/movie sale
dog wash?
car wash?
could have a company donate food and have a plate bb or a fishing tournament
it doesn’t take alot- and with donating every little thing and bit counts, so to all- you may say its only five dollars- but it makes a difference- lets wipe this out now- I am so tired of cancer in my lifetime and really want to see a cure for this
August 13th, 2008 at 1:34 pm
.75cents. God bless Tasha.
Here in our town we have a Christmas tree like structure on a tall building and the goal is to get the tree lit up before Christmas.I guess they start in November sometime. Lights can be bought for $10.00.When you buy a light you can donate that money in memory of someone and have a card mailed to someone else showing that there is a light on the tree for them. I always buy lights for my father and step-father who passes from cancer. My Christmas spirit is always a little brighter when I see that tree which is visible from almost anywhere in town.

75 cents of every dollar spent goes directly towards supporting The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s mission of a cure. That is a significant amount considering all that is needed to keep this organization up and running! I am impressed!

To answer your question about raising money for Light The Night, the types of fundraising activities I would pick are most definitely activities that can get the entire family involved. The typical things like Barbeques, Arts and Crafts Sales, Finding Local Bands to volunteer their time and put on a Benefit Concert and sell tickets to it to raise money, Have themes festivals like an Irish Festival, A Greek Festival, A German Festival, and try and recruit local vendors to donate food and look to the people of the community to cook and volunteer their time to work the festivals. Those are always fun and people get an opportunity to experience different cultures food and music!
I also think around the Holidays to have Fashion Shows, Raffles, where you can again recruit large companies to donate prizes, etc. for them.

I’m REALLY into scrapbooking and cardmaking. I was thinking that a fun idea for a fundraiser would be a Scrap-A-Thon!! Another idea I had was a similar idea but with making cards instead. The benefit of this on would be that the cards could be given to patients that are suffering with blood cancer.
Thanks so much!

75 cents of each dollar donated goes directly to LLS’ mission. I think a Singalong Night in the Park would be a great fundraiser. Invite an amateur band, or several, and let them play the old standards. Invite the crowd to join in singing.
