“We were one of five walks held this season in the Greater
Metro DC area. They announced some statistics that really
floored me into FOA. Greater Metro DC LLS has been doing LTN
walks for 8 years now. In those eight years they've raised
1.7 million!!!! They're trying to break $2 million with this
years walks. And FOA is trying to break $1 million in three
years? WOW! What an awesome group we are!I can't wait for
next year!” - Carole Franklyn
St. Paul MN
“We had a BEAUTIFUL evening. It was a perfect way to enjoy a
fall evening. We had 7 adult walkers, my 2 adorable kids and
2 furry friends who didn't behave and had to go sleep in the
car! I believe we have raised somewhere in the $2,200 range,
but I don't have final numbers yet and have a few donations
still coming in. I hope everyone has successful walks and
enjoys the walk as much as our Twin Cities team did! I can't
wait to see the $1 million mark! ” - Jill Donahue
Tucson AZ
“We had 62 walkers show up (not all were registered). We fed
them 90 hamburgers and 30 hotdogs.
We collected almost $17,000! At Jazzercise the morning after
the walk, I collected another $125 and I know there is more
money still coming in.
Matthew Haines’ grandmother [from affiliate Team Matthew]
came and walked with us. She brought $50 that night. We had
included his name on our banner in Memory of.
My grandson and son were unable to attend so my co-worker
and I made a life size cardboard cutout of Gavin so he is in
the pictures. He also went on the walk with us with his
white balloon. He now resides in my office at home.”

Captain Penny Duffy rallied her team to raise over $3,000.
Her innovative awareness and fundraising ideas also helped
her teach the spirit of compassion and charity to her
children. She produced a PSA with her kids and auctioned
their artwork. Donors who supported her kids’ fundraising
also received magnets featuring their designs.
Menlo Park CA
“As we were lining up, the kids were bursting with
excitement and I was teary-eyed. The sight of all the
blinking red balloons is always so amazing! RED representing
life-giving blood and bone marrow, and twinkling LIGHTS
representing hope in the darkness.
Even though one balloon in the darkness stands out, all the
balloons together create such a tremendous glow in the dusky
evening light. Such a powerful symbolism of how each person,
each fundraiser, each walker is so important.
Nationally, we did reach the $100,000 needed to secure the
research grant-naming on the night of our walk. Go FOA! How
fitting as Dr. Wiemels' lab (our grantee) is just a half
hour north of this walk site. I'm so proud of the hard work
being done on the part of the walkers and the cancer
research side - I hope a cure, or at least, better
treatments are on the horizon. I’m thrilled to be a part of
this amazing team.” - Jennifer Burgess
Vancouver BC
“We just got in from the walk and for the second year in a
row they predicted rain, and it held off until we were on
the drive home!!!
Preliminary totals for our 2nd LTN walk in Vancouver were
announced to be $239,000!! Over $100,000 more than last
year, and almost twice as many people registered!!
Our team consisted of 16 walkers. My 4 y/o raised $105
because she wanted her own t-shirt!
I came home from the walk to find a donation confirmation
that someone donated $100 to my fundraising this afternoon
while I was on my way to the walk!!” - Donna Robertson

“I captained two teams: the Friends of Allie team and the
Raymond James affiliate team.
My co-worker next to me was on the FOA team instead of
Raymond James (she couldn't make the walk). Her dad is
currently in remission for lymphoma--his 2nd battle with it.
The Raymond James team was walking for a young man named
Matt who works in one of the departments and was just
recently diagnosed with leukemia. He is undergoing
treatment. The cool part was that he showed up! I got him a
survivor shirt, and of course, a white balloon. It was
beautiful and so touching to see how much it meant to him
that we did this for him. He couldn't walk because he just
had a treatment that day. His doc said no to the walk, but
yes to showing up. I believe the team raised a little over
2k.
The walk itself was awesome...there were about double the
amount of people that were there last year! That was so
amazing! I could easily see thru the crowd last year...but
this year I couldn't and had to squeeze thru people to get
where I needed to
go.” - Sara Thoroughman

“Friday night could not have been more perfect! The weather
was gorgeous to begin with - it was about 80 during the day
- and I never even needed a sweatshirt that night, it was
great!! :) I had 2 team members call me at the last minute
to tell me they weren't going to be able to make it - but
our small team had fun anyway! :) I'm the only one who did
any fundraising, but that's ok too!
I showed up about 4:00 at the location to help set up - I
ended up blowing up a LOT of balloons! Then I was moved over
to the registration table - which is what I did last year -
and I think it is a lot of fun. It's cool to talk with
everyone as they come in.
I'm not sure exactly how many people were there that night,
but there were a lot - and we raised a preliminary total of
$32,000. Our goal for the walk was $47,000. Three of the
businesses at the shopping center had percentage nights for
LTN that evening - so that will add to the final total for
sure!
I set my personal goal at $1,000, and I really didn't think
I was going to make it. But when my mom showed up and
Brandon (my boyfriend) came with a couple of donations from
our work - it brought my total to $1,041! I was SOOOO
happy!!!
- Jennifer Cooper

“The FOA team raised $1,350 (not bad for a team of one!)
The walk itself had over 900 participants, and raised over
$200,000!! There were a lot of teams represented. One team
represents a little boy (I believe he's 3), who was
diagnosed last year with AML. At the time of the event last
year, he was undergoing his 3rd round of chemo. This year,
he's 9 months in remission after receiving a transplant from
his older brother!! Yeah!! He wasn't at the event, but there
was a big team there in his honour!
I worked at the registration table for the second year. It's
great to meet people and to help out. Overall, a great
night!” - Robin Brunet
Fresno

Four families comprised the Fresno team. Jennifer Burgess
and a friend spent three weeks at the local Farmer’s Market
raising awareness, recruiting and accepting donations for
LTN.

“We beat last year, and have less than half the people! I'm
so happy… of course, more than half of that total was raised
by my husband at his work. They were very generous.
“Special thanks to Christine who is going to drive more than
7 hours tomorrow with a 4 year-old... can't wait to meet
her!
“It looks like it's going to be a stunning night... we're
having a late summer here in the Great White North!” -
Connie Greenshields
“Well I made it home safe and sound at around 12:30 AM!! My
4 yr old daughter was fast asleep in the car. Thankfully we
got home because I was past ready for bed. All that fresh
air from the walk made me sleepy! Seven hours return trip
driving, all for 2 hours in Calgary’s LTN walk. Hopefully
next year, there is a second Alberta walk here in Edmonton.”
- Christine Usborne
Athens GA
“My friend, David, and I walked. I am a leukemia survivor,
as you see from the poster. I raised $650 and was very proud
to be a FOA team member. Thank you for all your hard work.”
- Kelly Beardon
Crown Point IN
Co-captains Beth Fletcher and Lynette Murphy worked
diligently all year to make their team goal by holding a
Pampered Chef fundraiser, a yard sale with donated items,
and hosting a booth at the 29th Annual Popcorn Festival to
raise awareness and sell Plushland animals and handcrafted
bracelets.

Kim Jones and her daughter represented FOA along with a
display of giraffes and butterflies on their hand-crafted
wagon and banner.
Los

After two years, Caroline Neal was glad to fully enjoy the
UCLA walk. The first year she had a foot injury and last
year she was 38 weeks pregnant!
Oklahoma City OK
“Hi everybody, I'm actually team captain for the Tulsa walk
but I walked in the Oklahoma City walk last night.
I got to meet another fellow FOA. There were 5 people that
walked. We were small in numbers but big in spirit. I
brought my friend Megan with me, and I now have another FOA
for my walk next year.
There were lots of touching stories and a few tears. I got
to share Allie’s story with a few people.” - Mary Lowe
Livonia MI
“We had a PERFECT night for our walk. Our team had 8
registered walkers who raised money, and many family
supporters and children who also walked. It's only this
site's second year.” - Denise Coleman

Newport

Team Reynolds, led by Sarah Pratt, rocked the Newport walk
and sailed in as their #1 team with $20,129 raised. Their
team was formed last year in honor of Sarah’s cousin Janice.
Sadly, Janice passed away earlier this year from cancer.

Perfect weather reported from Florida! Affiliate Team Logan
participated in their second LTN, their first with FOA.
Logan is doing well and nearing the end of his treatment for
ALL. He is pictured here with his grandparents. Team Logan
is glad to join FOA for LTN in the future!
Morgantown WV
“WOOOHOOO! Believe it or not, we raised $715 and had 15
walkers! I know it's small potatoes compared to a lot of
walks, but for a group of college students, well, they did
A-OK!
Do you all realize that I was planning to step down as team
captain in August, since I could not recruit anyone who was
not related to me? I was feeling really ineffectual and
since I'm kind of nuts right now with work, I was just about
to throw in the towel. I figured I'd pick it up again next
year, when I'll hopefully be less crazed at work (I've been
working steadily for the past 12 hours... yes, that
translates to 3:00 am this morning until now).
Of course God and Allie had other plans, and the very day I
tearfully decided to call off the whole Team Allie
Morgantown thing for this year, one of my summer school
students emailed and told me that the class was going to use
this as their service project this year. So I'm extremely
happy I stuck with it!
Takes our three year total up to just under $1,350. That's
$1,350 more than was in the pot without us, right? I know
some of you have individual walkers who blow that amount out
the window all by themselves, but for us, this is pretty
good, and growing stronger all the time.” - Lisa Weihman
Montclair NJ
Co-captains Jenny Feeney and Michele Zabnicki had 18 walkers
at their LTN .
“Our walk was so much fun! We were a team of ten walkers,
and our total team of 18 raised $1667 with money still
coming in!!! My best friend Cara hand painted our banner and
we carried it with great pride, and got many nice comments
on it. I was happy to be able to represent Friends of Allie
as our team co-captain and glad to be able to take part in
this wonderful event as part of this fantastic team!” -
Jenny Feeney
Sacramento CA
Beck Marko drove two and a half hours from Nevada to the CA
state capitol where she met up with two other FOA families.
She was so proud to walk and be a team captain.
